- Conduct Certified Testing: Testing follows 16 CFR § 1700.20, and the lab report is your proof of compliance. The child test uses up to 200 children aged 42-51 months, tested in groups of 50: no more than 15% may open the package within 5 minutes, and after a demonstration, no more than 20% may open it in another 5 minutes. The senior test uses 100 adults aged 50-70: at least 90% must open it within 5 minutes and reclose it within 1 minute.
- Label Clearly: Mark the package as "Child-Resistant Packaging" and include clear opening instructions.
CPSC Enforcement: 2026 Iron Supplement Recalls
This requirement is enforced. In early 2026, CPSC announced two recalls of iron-containing supplements that were not in child-resistant packaging. The January recall covered mindbodygreen's Ultimate Multivitamin+ bottles; CPSC warned of a risk of serious injury or death from poisoning in young children. The second covered multiple iron supplement bottles and packets, with a remedy of free child-resistant replacement caps or storage pouches. A missing or failed CR package on a gummy line means a recall.
